FRENCH and ITALIAN

GCSE Examination Board:  EDEXCEL

Pupils studying a language to GCSE continue with the study of the language followed in Year 9.

Content.

Modern Languages are an essential part of the general education of all pupils. They are a very useful asset in combination with other subjects for industrial, commercial and professional careers.

The GCSE course follows the pattern of the course begun in Year 9, extending the range of situations. The aim of the course is to provide pupils with the necessary vocabulary and knowledge of the language to enable them to cope abroad in a wide variety of everyday situations. Each situation is introduced through dialogues and listening exercises.  All activities are carried out in the target language.

Homework is set each week and includes learning vocabulary or conversations, writing short items and reading practice.

Assessment:

Pupils sit examinations at the end of the course and are tested on:

      *   Reading
      *   Listening
      *   Speaking
      *   Writing     (This is currently done as a coursework unit)

Each skill counts for 25% of the final mark.
