Music in Year 9

Course outline:

This is the first year that we will be introducing the Edexcel BTEC level 2 Certificate in Music course in year 9.  Music is an optional subject and students will have the opportunity to develop their performance skills in a variety of musical styles.  Students are encouraged to seek enjoyment and a sense of achievement through the study of music. Students are taught in mixed ability groups with work tailored to meet individual requirements.

Instrument lessons and Extra Curricular groups

Students have the opportunity to learn an instrument through Bedfordshire Music Service. Tuition is available on brass, woodwind, strings, voice and percussion instruments. Students are encouraged to participate in organised ensembles and take part in regular performances both in and out of school.

 

Music in Year 10/11

Course title: Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended certificate in Music (Performance)

Course outline:

The course has been developed in the performing arts sector to focus on:

  • Education and training for those who work or are intending to work in the music industry.
  • Providing opportunities to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification (equivalent to 2 GCSEs).
  • Providing opportunities for students to gain a qualification to enter employment in the music sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel level 3 and beyond.
  • Providing opportunities for students to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes.

The course comprises 4 units; 2 core units which everyone takes and 2 specialist units which enable the student to study particular areas in more detail.

Core units:

  • Working in the music industry
  • Professional development in the music industry

Specialist units chosen from:

  • Planning and creating a music product
  • Composing
  • Solo music performance
  • Working as a musical ensemble
  • Rehearsal techniques for musicians
  • The musical world

Students are encouraged to participate in the musical life of the school and wider community.

Music in Year 12/13

Course title: Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Music (Performance)

Course outline:

The course has been developed in the performing arts sector to focus on:

  • Education and training for those who work or are intending to in the music industry.
  • Providing opportunities to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification (equivalent to 1 A Level).
  • Providing opportunities for students to gain a qualification to enter employment in the music sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel level 3 and beyond.
  • Providing opportunities for students to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes.

The course comprises 6 units; 1 core unit which everyone takes and at least 1 specialist unit plus optional units which will add up to the appropriate number of credits. Each unit is worth 10 credits. The specialist unit enables the student to study particular areas in more detail.

Core units:

  • Music performance techniques

Specialist units will be a choice of the following:

  • Solo performance skills
  • Working and developing as a musical ensemble

Optional units will be a selection from the following:

  • Music in the community
  • Music project
  • Musical theatre performance
  • Pop music in practice
  • Special subject investigation

Students are encouraged to participate in the musical life of the school and wider community.
