ASTONUDING GCSE RESULTS
Wow! What a record. GCSE results have again soared to even greater heights for us. The 2010 cohort of students has achieved an astounding 77% A*-C pass rate, with 100% pass rate of A-G being reached. Our school set target was 70% for A-C grades, so the students have surpassed themselves again.
Last year the Average Point Score per student was 443; this year a colossal jump to 512 per student has been made.
I'm sure you will all agree that the students' determination to succeed has paid off, as have the efforts of staff. For all your hard work, both students and staff, we thank you. These results are tremendous - since 2006 we have risen each year, and you can all be exceptionally proud of the part that you have played in this success - whether as tutors, teachers or mentors to Year 11. We particularly thank Leo Aquino for his unstinting efforts with the year group as Year Co-ordinator.

It was wonderful today as we celebrated all the successes of this special group of students.
We want to thank all staff for keeping faith with students throughout their time in the 6th form and the relentless drive to ensure the very best outcomes. The combination of challenge and support has paid dividends in Year 13 and there are also very positive results for Year 12.
Congratulations to all and particular thanks to Richard Potter (Director of Sixth Form) and all who helped today.

St Thomas More School Hosts Deanery Meeting
Confidence Conversation and Connection
St Thomas More School provided the venue for the Deanery meeting where representatives from each of the Bedford Parishes convened to watch Bishop Peter’s DVD, Walking Humbly with our God. This was part of the process in developing a framework for the future, building upon the reflection and conversation inspired by Bishop Peter’s vision. Discussion then took place in Parish groups focussing on devising an achievable plan for the future of our Pastoral Area.
Michael Simmonds coordinated the meeting and following the DVD we divided into Parish groups to identify areas of strength with a view to sharing expertise across the Deanery. In addition, the groups were able to explore areas which require further development. The ideas were then collated and will form the basis of the ground plan which will be submitted to Bishop Peter in the coming months.
The local steering group consisting of Canon Seamus Keenan, Fr Tony Brennan, Michael Simmonds, Rosemarie Langley, Mary Frost and I meet on a regular basis and at present we are busy analysing questionnaires which have been completed on a Parish basis.
Using the excellent Performance Area at St Thomas More enabled all the Parishes to meet and share their ideas rather than working in isolation. It was helpful to listen to the views of other groups as we fed back on the range and scope of the present provision within each of the Parishes. The challenge is now to ‘bring the story together’, defining local aspirations and to establish a set of priorities for the future. All the schools in the Catholic Federation have been invited to contribute to the process so that every voice is heard. St Thomas More School will be coordinating the focus group which will be seeking the views of all stakeholders.

St Thomas More School recognised for Community Cohesion
Mrs. Grimley and Ms Topa were the proud recipients of the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard Gold Award at a recent ceremony in London. St Thomas More was one of 14 Specialist Schools and Academies which were recognised for their outstanding work in promoting community cohesion at the national ceremony.
The schools from across the country have all achieved the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard (CDQS) which was developed by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) to promote cultural diversity, race equality and opportunities for achievements for all students.
The celebration, organised by the SSAT, took place on 18 January 2010 in London at the offices of Deloitte, the professional services organisation, who sponsored the event.
In his keynote address, Ted Cantle, Chair of the Community Cohesion Institute said:
'Teachers can have an impact not just on their pupils' perceptions, but on those of the whole community .A role that government ministers are recognising as ever important. Teaching and learning has to reflect the ever changing world - the world is not just an Easy jet ride away, but has come to us and is in our communities. Getting children to have a broader, worldly view is essential so they can contextualize their issues and navigate themselves around the world.
The schools who have been successful in achieving the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard are beacons for other schools who have not embraced the community cohesion agenda as readily - they can inspire others and show them that it is possible to achieve fantastic things, whatever the challenges.'
Kirstie Andrew-Power, Head of Achievement, Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, commented:
'The Cultural Diversity Quality Standard aims to share good practice so that schools may learn from each other. We are delighted to recognise the outstanding achievements of these award winners. The work which they do to promote equality is vitally important as we live increasingly in a global community.'
CDQS awards are made at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, dependent on the school's work across six standards:
Ethos, Achievement, Curriculum, Parental and Community Involvement, Staffing and Governors, Specific Projects and Innovation.
St Thomas More is proud to have gained the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard Gold Award which reflects the tremendous work of all within the school.
